Planet of the Apes Mask by Ray Phillips

23 Jul 2013

Ray completed this fantastic mask of 'General Thade' using sculpting, moulding and casting techniques learned from Neill's 'Creating Character Prosthetics in Silicone' DVD set.
The piece is complemented by a beautiful costume replication too.

Here's a summary of the process and his comments on using the DVDs:

'The mask was sculpted in Chavant NSP, moulded in fibreglass with the finished mask cast in Platsil Gel 10. Without the DVD's I don't think I would of had the confidence to attempt the mask and costume but the information gleaned from the DVD made it relatively easy to complete.'

Steampunk Frankenstein & Ancient Medusa by Anthony Pepe

19 Jul 2013

Beautiful, intricate pieces from Anthony Pepe whose FX studio is in New York City. Anthony has been working professionally in the field of make-up FX for 15 years and was one of the original 12 contestants in popular reality show Face Off in 2010, here’s his take on our DVDs:

‘I wanted to say that I consider Neill Gorton's DVD's my video bible, and play them numerous times in my shop. The molding, casting, and painting techniques I learned from 'The Art of Silicone Prosthetics' and 'Creating Character Prosthetics in Silicone' have helped me immensely in creating two of my favorite display pieces’

Famous Faces by Mike Chapman

19 Jul 2013

This is brilliant! Thanks to Mike for sharing his story and well done on some terrific work, Sloth is an really impressive first ever make-up. Here’s how he came about....

‘3 years ago I thought that I would live out my childhood dream to be a make-up artist by making up a friend of mine as Sloth (from The Goonies) for Halloween. After hearing a lot of extremely positive reviews of Neill's set, I purchased his 'Creating Character Prosthetics in Silicone' series and began my journey in making make-up effects. The DVDs were so well thought out and every detail of the process was explained. Without any previous experience in make-up or prosthetics, with the DVD as my guide I was able to sculpt, mold, cast and paint a finished appliance on the first attempt. Since then, I have purchased every DVD that Neill puts out and recommend them to any person who has an interest in make-up. Every new release inspires me to create - I can say without hesitation that these DVDs changed my life. I hope some of these examples help someone else choose to start the journey. A world of thanks.’

Extreme Ageing on Adam Savage by Danny Wagner, USA

19 Jul 2013

Well-known US prosthetics designer Danny Wagner did this fabulous extreme ageing (132 years) for a Discovery Channel documentary in the Curiosity series, called Can You Live Forever? The make-up is on host Adam Savage, who also hosts Mythbusters.

This was one of many make-ups Danny did for the series, and he used some of the techniques from the compilation set of ‘Creating Character Prosthetics in Silicone’ for this particular one.

Here’s what he had to say on the subject:

‘The Neill Gorton DVD was great. After years of experience and 20 years at ILM I was still able to use some of the great techniques to create a beautiful full pull over silicone encapsulated prosthetic. First one I ever did and it worked out great. The Discovery and Curiosity clients loved it too! It was the first time I was able to submit a prosthetic Emmy submission, which was an exciting time. Unfortunately I didn't get a nomination. But I was accepted. Thank you’

These are the particular techniques Danny used from the DVD compilation:

DVD 1. PREPARING AND MOULDING THE LIFECAST: ‘I used silicone lifecasting material and used that mold to make my final positive mold for the sculpting. ‘

DVD 2. PREPARING FOR AND SCULPTING THE PROSTHETIC APPLIANCE: ‘I did sculpt separate ears and ran gelatin out of them. After final positive lifecast was done I drilled key holes for molding, and a hole on top of the head for injecting silicone. Then sculpted the full head appliance.’

DVD 3. MOULDING THE PROSTHETIC SCULPTURE: ‘I made the mold out of Ultracal 30 and sealed it. Released it with vaseline and spray release and sprayed the encapsulated material then ran the silicone.’

Anthony did the 7-week Make-Up FX and Prosthetics Creation course at Gorton Studio a few years ago and has continued to perfect his skills since, as is evident from this fantastic selection of work.

Here are his comments on the DVDs:

‘I found the DVDs very helpful and a good back up for the things learnt on the seven week course. I have watched all the DVDs and I found the knowledge in them very helpful and I use most of the processes to create the make-ups I have sent you.

DVDs used were  ‘Creating Character Prosthetics in Silicone’ and ‘The Art of Silicone Prosthetics Part Two: Multi piece appliances.’

SEVERED HAND BY PETER BUTLER

29 Nov 2011

Peter says "I found your 'Creating Character Prosthetics in Silicone' a great aid in helping me create a severed hand. I've never had the opportunity to create prosthetics before, but it's something I've always wanted to do since I was a child.

These pictures show my results. Far from perfect but I was more than happy with it. I also created a blog on how I went about it....it also shows a lot of the mistakes I made:  Blog Part 1   Blog Part 2

Thanks for your easy to follow tutoring, I look forward to my next challenge which hopefully will be making a severed head!"

Old Age Make-Up by Fito Dellibarda

10 Aug 2011

Old age make-up made by Fito Dellibarda in 2008, for the Portuguese magician Luis de Matos. This was based on Neill’s DVD series “Creating Character Prosthetics in Silicone,” and was for a hidden camera trick in Luis de Mato’s magic TV show.

The audience didn’t suspect for any moment that Luis was wearing silicone prosthetics... in fact, the technicians on the show thought for a long time that the old wizard was a guest!!

Voldemort by Kieran Thomas

10 Aug 2011

Kieran is a member of UK costuming club the UK Garrison www.ukgarrison.co.uk and created this for their sister club, Reel Icons They raise money for children's charities and have raised over £1 million pounds so far. This piece which is (to the best of their knowledge) the 1st ever attempt at a "movie accurate" version will help with the fundraising and took 3 years to complete.

The nose was digitally removed in the film which added to the challenge of creating a prosthetic to copy it. Kieran has this to say about how he used the DVDs for this project:

"Hi Neill, I just wanted to write to say thank you so much for your wonderful DVD titled "Creating Character Prosthetics in Silicone".

I'm not a special effects professional, nor have I ever attempted any kind of prosthetic before (I'm not even an arty person at the best of times), so to say I was a little daunted at the prospect of needing to create a full head prosthetic would be an understatement.

However, your DVD proved invaluable!

The way you presented the content was so easy for a newbie such as myself to follow. What was especially great is that you didn't just say "you need to do this"... but you went on to say why things were done a certain way. I also loved the fact that you were so free and open with so many tips along the way. These really helped prevent me from learning things the hard way.

I honestly can't thank you enough. I'd highly recommend your DVDs for anyone thinking of tackling prosthetics for the first time, or for someone just getting into the field and I've already recommended it to a number of friends. The only thing is, now I want to check out your Lifecasting DVD too!

Kieran Thomas (Oxfordshire)"

These shots show Kieran working on the sculpt, a close-up of the texturing, the finished sculpt, a comparison of the actual character in the film and the prosthetic copy taken part way through the build (ears and robes photoshopped), plus of course the finished piece complete with costume!

Zombie FX by Darren Grassby of 2 Baldies FX

09 Aug 2011

Three pieces by Darren inspired by Neill’s DVDS:

  1. "Black Zombie Dude" - a full Platgel custom fit mask sculpted in "Le Beau Touche" on a urethane lifecast, and moulded in 3 parts as shown in the DVDs. It was bolted together then injected with Platgel through the pour tube running up through the lifecast. Seamed/painted with Fuse FX/FW paints and oil paints thinned with white spirit.

  2. A generic flat piece/scrape over Platgel "Ripped off” lips and mouth appliance, made for the web series "Zomblogalypse"

  3. A prosthetic Platgel full ‘over the head’ custom fit "Zombie old age" mask, complete with Darren’s own zombie custom fit teeth and some weird blue/black contact lenses.
